13A – Reading Reflection No. 1

One of the things that surprised me most about the by the Wright brothers was how they did not originally begin with planes. They got their inspiration from working on bicycles and other pieces of machinery. The one thing I admired most about the Wright brothers was their dedication to create a piece of machinery that was never seen before. There was honestly nothing I didn’t admire from the Wright brothers. I liked how they saw an opportunity and acted on it. After doing further research online though I found they had a series of plane crashes from 1912-1913 in the army but blamed it on pilot error. I feel if all the planes that crashed were designed by the Wright brothers, it is more than pilot error. The main failures they faced were flight crashes. They never let that set them back though and continued to find reasons why test flights failed.

The competencies I noticed from the Wright brothers was their structured routine when it came to test flights and created different models of planes. They were able to be very efficient when testing since they used a wind tunnel they built at home. This gave them very accurate data when designing planes.

One of the things that was confusing was the actual technical details with their air flight. This including things such as the design of the aircraft and the science behind it. I am not familiar with airplanes and their mechanics so that part of the reading was a tad confusing. The other thing I found confusing about the book was the actual layout. The book was split into 3 parts that I did not particularly care for.

The first question I would ask the Wright brothers is what gave them the drive to make airplanes? Such as what kept them going after they failed countless times and the public did not believe in them? Another question I would have liked to ask is what were their goals in the very beginning when designing airplanes? Did they just aim for commercial flight or did they want to go bigger and head to the moon and other planets?

I think the entrepreneur’s opinion on hard work was very straightforward. Have a vision and passion for something and do whatever you can to achieve that vision. The Wright brothers did everything they could to be successful at making a plane, from a design standpoint, marketing, and legal.

  1. Hey Nick, I really enjoyed reading your piece about the Wright Brothers. I didn't know much about them myself so it was cool to learn as I read your writing. I especially liked your last little paragraph about the entrepreneurs opinion of hard work. I think you got it spot on. Overall, I think you did a great job with the assignment!

  2. Hey Nick, I think its awesome you chose this book to read. It blows my mind thinking about how other people probably viewed the brothers when they were trying to make the first airplane. Plane were invented a little over 100 years ago and now it is such a common mode of transportation. 100 years isn't even that long ago. The amount of technological advances that have occurred in such a short amount of time is crazy.

  3. Hey Nick. I enjoyed reading your Reading Reflection assignment and think you did a really good job of summarizing the book. I think the book you chose was an excellent one and the Wright brothers are an excellent example of entrepreneurs. It is crazy to me how people so long ago were able to invent something so significant such as the ability to fly an airplane. Great job!
